craft gives back auction

We’re Jenny Fong, clothing designer and founder of Modern Shibori, and Marja Germans Gard, jewelry artist and founder of MGG Studio, and we’re small business owners based in the Bay Area.

We both ground our business values in principles of sustainability, and we’re committed to making business decisions guided by concern for both people and the planet. We’re aware of the differential impact of environmental policies on communities of color, and we want to contribute to the fight for environmental, social and racial justice.

That’s why we’re launching our first fundraising initiative, the Craft Gives Back Auction for Justice, on September 18-20, 2020

We have two important goals for this event: first, we want to amplify local Bay Area BIPOC designers and artists. Second, we are looking to invest the money raised by the auction directly back into the local community by supporting an organization with substantive environmental and social justice impact.

With this second goal in mind, we’ve selected Planting Justice, a West Oakland-based permaculture garden, as the beneficiary of the auction. Since 2009, Planting Justice has built over 450 edible permaculture gardens in the San Francisco Bay Area, worked with five high schools to develop food justice curricula and created 40 green jobs in the food justice movement for folks transitioning from prison.

We’re looking for Bay Area businesses like yours to join us in this fundraising effort! We want to support you by amplifying your business through social media (via the Craft Gives Back Instagram and our individual business Instagram accounts), through email outreach campaigns, and through local press outreach.

Interested? Here’s how to get involved:

  1. Identify an item or items (valued at $75 or more- this could be a gift card to your shop!) to be auctioned off on our Instagram @craftgivesback.
  2. Provide us a photo of your donation and 1 - 2 sentences about it. We want to amplify you! Provide 50 words about you and your process/inspiration that we can share during the auction and in our outreach campaign. (If you’d like to share a picture of yourself as well, we’d love that!)
  3. Spread the word about the auction, participating businesses and Planting Justice on social media and via your email list leading up to and during the event (we’ll provide graphics and other collateral for sharing).
  4. Mail your donated item to the winning bidder within 5 business days of the end of the auction (upon receiving proof of the winner's donation to Planting Justice).

We’re excited to collaborate with our local creative business community to raise money for this amazing local organization, and we hope you’re able to join us in this effort. Questions? Reach out at and we’ll get back to you asap! Please let us know by Friday, September 4, if you’d like to take part, and we'll share additional specifics about our outreach campaign.
